Clytie Alexander

Betty Cuningham Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of the work of Clytie Alexander, in our next-door space, SIDECAR. This is Alexander’s second show with the gallery, located at 15 Rivington Street. The artist will be present for an opening reception on Thursday, April 20 from 6 – 8pm.

Ink and Paper includes approximately 40 of Alexander’s works on paper each measuring 30 x 22 inches and dating 2014-2016. Continuing her investigation of space in and around the picture plane, Alexander moves from her previous exhibition of perforated color Diaphans to probe the same issues in new work from the Loop series. In this series, the artist utilizes torn fragments of colored ink drawings on various papers, some opaque and some transparent, mounted on watercolor paper. While sharing elements, each piece in the Loop series is unique and the variations, occurring piece to piece, create both motion and stillness. Building color or black on white and working with ‘permeable boundaries’, Alexander constructs an experience of seeing the walls on which the work is installed and the work itself as a random sequence of multiple perspectives.

Born in Lawrence Kansas, Clytie Alexander was educated in Quebec and Bangladesh. She studied art at UCLA. She is the recipient of awards and grants including: the American Academy of Arts and Letters Hassan, Speicher, Bett and Symonds Art Purchase Award 2013, 2007 and 2003; the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant 2005; the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant 1993 and 2001; and the Elizabeth Foundation Studio Program Award 1998-2018.

Her work resides in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; Weatherspoon Art Museum Greensboro, NC; Christian Keesee Collection, Oklahoma City, OK; Getty Research Institute Library, Los Angeles, CA; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Harwood Museum of Art, Taos, NM; and the Francesco Moschini Foundation, Rome, Italy. She works and lives in New York, Santa Fe and Los Angeles.

The exhibition will remain on view through May 26, 2017.
